Application Overview Ionic Liquids, also known as Room Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTILs), are salts that are liquid at or below ambient temperature. They are seen as potential “green solvents” due to their negligible vapour pressures, in comparison to those of volatile organic solvents, and there is therefore a great deal of interest in Ionic Liquids for a range of applications in green chemistry and clean technology, including various catalysis, synthesis and separation processes. The measurement of the solubility and diffusivity of gases and vapours in Ionic Liquids is of crucial significance for these applications and this can be measured over a range of pressures using the gravimetric technique. Instruments from the IGA Series have therefore been used in a number of recent studies on ILs [1-8], including the study of water [1], carbon dioxide [5,8] and hydrofluorocarbon [6] sorption.
