Application Overview

Molecular sieves are used in a diverse range of industrial applications from desiccants to catalyst supports. They are porous materials with a well-defined pore size, and include zeolites and activated carbons.

The IGA Series has been extensively used in both industrial and academic laboratories to characterise these types of materials. The gravimetric technique is used, which allows a quantified sample degassing procedure, versatile experimental set-up and pore size analysis using selective probes.

The types of studies that can be performed include:
  • Gas and vapor sorption isotherms
  • Capacity and kinetics determination, as a function of temperature and pressure
  • BET surface areas and pore size distributions (PSD), using Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) and Dubinin-Astakhov (DA) models
  • Multicomponent gas and vapor sorption
  • Reaction TG-MS

Most of the IGA gravimetric analyser series can be used for the study of molecular sieving materials. The IGA-001 for single component gas sorption, the IGA-002 for single component vapours, the IGA-003 for flowing gas and multi-component sorption, and the IGA-200 for multicomponent gas and vapour sorption measurement.

Examples of published data measured using Hiden Isochema instrumentation can be found in the reference list below.
