Our History
Origins of Hiden Isochema
The first Intelligent Gravimetric Analyzer (IGA) was developed in the Department of Physics and Space Research at the University of Birmingham, as part of a project funded by the UK Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC). This led to a commercialized system, the first of which was installed in 1989.
From 1992, the IGA was manufactured and developed into a full product range by Hiden Analytical Ltd, from its manufacturing base in Warrington, England. Following the continued success of the IGA range, a dedicated water sorption analyzer, the IGAsorp, was launched in the late 1990s and Hiden Isochema Ltd formed in January 2002 to further specialize in the development and manufacture of sorption-specific instrumentation.
1982
Hiden Analytical was founded and its first quadrupole mass spectrometer, the HAL 100, is launched.
1989
The first Intelligent Gravimetric Analyzer (IGA), originally developed in the Department of Physics and Space Research at the University of Birmingham, was installed at British Petroleum in Sunbury, England. University of Birmingham later gives Hiden Analytical the licence to manufacture and further commercialize the IGA.
1992
Hiden Analytical establishes a Sorption Technology Division and manufacture of the IGA begins in Warrington. British Gas in Solihull, England, is an early customer.
1997
Hiden Analytical launches the IGAsorp, a high performance dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) analyzer, targeted at the pharmaceutical industry.
2002
Hiden Isochema Ltd was founded as a wholly owned subsidiary of Hiden Analytical Ltd, to further specialize in the development and manufacture of sorption-specific instrumentation.
2005
A high pressure manometric gas sorption analyzer, the HTP, was launched, aimed primarily at solid state hydrogen storage research.
2011
Intelligent Manometric Instrument (IMI) range launched as a successor to the HTP, broadening its use into carbon capture, natural gas storage and gas separation applications.
2013
Hiden Isochema moves into new, purpose built UK headquarters, including a 13,000 sq ft factory, and launches the XEMIS, a new type of sorption microbalance.
2020
Groundbreaking Integral Mass Balance (IMB) method for measuring multicomponent adsorption published by Hiden Isochema scientists.
2021 – present
Hiden Isochema continues to innovate and expand, supported by a global network of sales agents and representatives. New products in the IGAsorp range have been launched, as we strive to provide the most comprehensive range of gas and vapor sorption instruments currently on the market.

Hiden Analytical and Hiden Isochema are now part of the Hiden Instruments Group.
